Tokyo Creative Media Practices

AMES 5420-001 Fall 2022 Wednesdays 4-6:30 Folwell Hall 121

In this collaboratory we will analyse how creative media practices can reshape the historical narratives and contemporary spatial practices of Tokyo.  Through the lens of the three Tokyo Olympics in 1940, 1964 and 2021, we will examine the imperial, high-growth and post-growth forces that regulate urban space and look towards movements that provide alternative visions of Tokyo.  How are literary and cinematic representations of Tokyo remade and challenged? How are social media practices being used to control and contest the right to the city? Using creative media practices to document, archive and map new spatial practices, we will examine how collaborative creative practices can foreground relations of care. We will engage with critical cartography, counter-archives and creative practice ethnographies, to imagine alternative forms of the city and co-create archaeologies of the future. Interdisciplinary perspectives and diverse experiences and skills are welcome.  No creative background necessary.
